Frisian Dew is Dutch Passion's outdoor flagship — a feminised hybrid that traces its genetics to a cross between a Super Skunk female and a Purple Star male, selectively bred over many generations in Friesland, a northernmost province of the Netherlands where the Frisian language gives the strain its name. The breeding work was done by Shiva, and the result carries genuine hybrid vigor: Sativa genes drive long continuous blooms, Indica genes produce compact buds, and the combination yields one of the most consistent outdoor producers in commercial cannabis. The strain has accumulated real competition hardware — 1st place at the 2008 Highlife Cup in the Netherlands, and more recently 3rd place in the Dutch Hash category at the 2018 Homegrown Cup. Frisian Dew has been a cornerstone of Dutch Passion's Outdoor feminised seed collection for many years and continues to beat newer varieties at the outdoor game with relative ease. Described by users and growers as fruity, fresh, and floral, with terpene variation across phenotypes — some lean toward forest fruits and light lemon, others toward pine and lavender, and a subset express earth, ammonia, and herbal notes that show the Skunk parent influence. The unique terpene profile provides a pleasant smoking experience across the phenotypic range. Roughly 50% of plants produce purple-hued buds in the tops; there are completely green phenotypes and some plants that express pure purple from cola to calyx, and the light purple variant is a particular favorite for taste and potential among Dutch Passion's own team.
Frisian Dew is an outdoor and greenhouse strain only — it is not suitable for indoor cultivation under lights, and growers looking to run it indoors should pick a different variety. Outdoor and greenhouse plants can grow to impressive proportions: 3-4 m heights are typical, and under optimal conditions plants of 3.5 m tall by 3.5 m wide are no exception. In most Northern Hemisphere climates harvest lands in October, though greenhouse plants can sometimes finish a few weeks earlier — but note that the most bud weight is produced in those final weeks, and harvesting too early leads directly to lower yield, so patience pays. Flowering runs approximately 8 weeks. It handles cold, wet, hot, and dry conditions significantly better than most traditional cannabis strains, and its robust mould resistance is one of the practical reasons it has become the go-to pick for outdoor growers in challenging climates. For pre-growth, Dutch Passion recommends starting indoors on an 18/6 light cycle for 3-6 weeks before moving seedlings outside — planting directly outside or putting very young seedlings out brings risks from weather and pests, and the larger and healthier the plant is when it goes outdoors, the better the survival odds. Frisian Dew responds well to LST, supercropping, and pruning, as well as pinching and fimming, which growers can apply multiple times during the growth phase to encourage a bushier structure with more side blooms rather than pure vertical height. For maximum flavor expression, cultivate organically with natural nutrients. Pay extra attention to dead leaves during mid and late flowering — the heavy, thick buds can trap dead leaves against wet tissue and trigger top rot or fungus if left unchecked, which is the main cultivation risk with this strain.
Yields are genuinely impressive — Frisian Dew is classified as XXL for good reason. Outdoor and greenhouse plants can produce several kilograms of dried buds per plant under the right conditions, and even beginners typically pull several hundred grams per plant without advanced technique. The effect is a proper hybrid experience. Smoke a little and you feel an energetic, creative up-high; smoke more and a heavy body stone takes over, easing you into a relaxed evening state. Users wanting more of the Sativa up-high are recommended to harvest slightly earlier — fewer amber trichomes, more head. Users wanting the narcotic Indica experience should let the plants go longer, which builds more amber trichomes and a stronger body effect. Either way, the high is long-lasting, and many outdoor growers describe it as the perfect all-day smoke for both day and night use. Thick elongated buds are a real visual feast at harvest, with the light purple variant in particular producing some of the most photogenic outdoor flower in commercial cannabis. Auto Frisian Dew is no longer available, but the feminised photoperiod version remains in stock and isn't going anywhere — these seeds will be available for years to come. A true classic outdoor marijuana strain of legendary proportions, and the benchmark Dutch Passion builds against when evaluating other outdoor picks. For beginners it's easy to achieve large returns; in expert hands it's capable of several kg of dry flower per plant. Only grow outdoors or in greenhouses — don't waste indoor space on it.
For growers selecting phenotypes from a pack, expect variance across three axes: color (green vs light purple vs near-black purple), aromatic lean (forest fruit vs pine vs herbal-ammonia), and final plant architecture (standard Christmas tree vs bushier lateral development after training). The light purple phenotype is worth actively watching for during early flower — pink hairs and a lighter color in early bud formation are reliable indicators, and that cut tends to produce the cleanest flavor profile across the line. Completely green phenotypes aren't a problem either; they often run slightly higher yield and retain the fruity-floral terpene signature without the earthy undertones some purple cuts pick up from the Skunk parent. Growers planning to keep a mother or clone should fine-tune selection before committing to a keeper — the phenotypic range makes blind selection risky.
On the cultivation side, a few specific considerations pay off. Because Frisian Dew is designed for outdoor and greenhouse use rather than tight-space indoor, its stretch during flower is substantial — plants started from seed indoors for 3-6 weeks of pre-growth then moved outside will often triple in height through veg and flower combined, so growing space needs to be planned accordingly. Soil drainage matters more than soil richness at this scale — a plant this size will outrun moderate nutrient limitations but cannot compensate for waterlogged roots, especially in wet autumn conditions. Organic nutrition is Dutch Passion's specific recommendation and it's worth following: natural amendments produce the cleanest flavor expression and reduce the fungal pressure that heavy synthetic feeding can trigger in late flower. LST, supercropping, pruning, pinching, and fimming can all be applied multiple times during vegetative growth to control height and produce a bushier frame with more bud sites. For pot growers, target at least 50 L minimum and scale up to smart pots of several hundred liters for maximum plant size — the bigger the root zone, the bigger the final plant. One common mistake is under-sizing the pot and then blaming the strain for a small final plant; Frisian Dew's yield scales almost linearly with root space up to several kg per plant.
One final note for outdoor growers: Frisian Dew has been grown successfully everywhere from UK outdoor plots in severe weather to Belgian greenhouses to Australian greenhouses under white net shade cloth for high-temperature conditions. That climatic range is unusual for a commercial outdoor strain, and it's part of why it remains the default recommendation for growers who don't know their climate constraints in advance. For first-time outdoor growers especially: this is the strain that gives you the best chance of landing a substantial harvest without needing advanced technique, climate control, or deep genetic knowledge. The genetics are stable enough that even a bad year will still produce usable weight, and in a good year she will outperform most commercial outdoor crosses that cost two or three times as much.
